It
was the desire to add a Girl Scout badge to her sash that ushered MaryAnne
Golon into her future career in photojournalism. The oldest girl of
six children, Maryanne’s mother purchased her first Kodak 126 box
camera with a flash on top with S&H green stamps. Those stamps were
the first investment in a career that would eventually land Golon a job
at TIME magazine
as a picture editor. In the last year she coordinated coverage of the Iraq
war. Golon also coordinated the photography for TIME’s National
Magazine Award winning special black-bordered edition commemorating September
11.
Golon has judged three Pictures of the Year competitions and will return
to Amsterdam this fall to teach the Joop Swaart World Press Masterclass
for a second time. During the first Gulf War, she served as the on-site
photography editor for TIME and Life magazines, and has directed the
Olympic
Game coverage from 1984 to 2002. Golon graduated with honors from the University
of Florida in 1990. She lives with her son, Christian, in Demarest, N.J. |
